World Literature Student Union

About

The WLSU advocates for the students of World Literature, and is dedicated to providing a sense of community within the World Literature program. We regularly host events that give students the opportunity to engage with their fellow students and to feel a sense of belonging and support amidst the often overwhelming experience of being an Undergraduate student.

Past Events

In the past, our union’s events have been primarily centred around artistic activities, since many students drawn to World Literature are creative individuals. Some examples of these events have included origami, bookmark, and button making events.

We also strive to provide career-oriented events for students so that they are aware of all the career opportunities World Literature provides. These events have included alumni visits and Q&A sessions. Furthermore, every Fall, the WLSU hosts special author lectures, that are usually centred around the theme of translation.

Why Join?

Students should join the WLSU if they are interested in being part of a close-knit group of supportive friends. We always want to meet new people, and welcome everyone regardless of ethnicity, gender, sexuality, or religion. Diversity and inclusivity lies at the core of the WL program, and we appreciate a wide variety of perspectives and personalities in our union.

Interesting Fact

Despite being one of the smallest programs on campus, our student union is a mighty force! Every Spring, we host the World Literature Student Conference, the largest such event in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

We also work closely with the team of the Lyre Magazine, the World Literature department’s student-run literary magazine. Indeed, if you are a World Literature student, the opportunities for you to get involved are vast, and the union works hard to ensure that you are able to make the most out of your Undergraduate experience through these opportunities!

Keep in Touch

We unfortunately don't have a common room at this time, but our Facebook is https://www.facebook.com/SFUWLSU/ and Instagram is @sfuwlsu

We respectfully acknowledge that FASS Fest takes place on the unceded ancestral and traditional territories of the səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations, on which we are privileged to live, work, and play. Unceded means that these territories have never been handed over, sold, or given up by these nations, and we are currently situated on occupied territories. The settler colony of British Columbia was created using various forms of strategic violence and dispossession, which has structured our society and created lasting injustices that today persist. We acknowledge that, in the present, new forms of colonial violence and dispossession continue to be established on these territories.
